A brief biography of Imam Muhammad ibn Sabbah (rahimahullah)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Kindly provide a brief biography of Imam Ibn Sabbagh (ابن الصباغ), a student of Imam Shafi’i (rahimahumallah).

Answer

Perhaps you are referring to Ibn Sabbah (ابن الصباح), as he was indeed a prominent student of Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah).

‘Allamah Ibn Sabbagh (ابن الصباغ) was a Shafi’i scholar from the 5th century of Islam, two centuries after Imam Shafi’i (rahimahumallah).

(Refer: Siyaru A’alamin Nubala, vol. 18 pg. 464 onwards)

Imam Abu ‘Ali, Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Sabbah Al-Baghdadi Az-Za’farani (rahimahullah) was a great Muhaddith and Faqih who was born after the year 170AH.

He acquired knowledge from various Aimmah such as Imams: Shafi’i, Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, Isma’il ibn ‘Ulayyah, Waki’ ibn Jarrah and many others (rahimahumullah).

He had many great students such as Imams: Bukhari, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Majah, Ibn Khuzaymah, and many others (rahimahumullah).

Ibn ‘Abdil Barr (rahimahullah) has mentioned that Imam Ibn Sabbah, after initially following the Madhab of the people of ‘Iraq, changed his view and studied under Imam Shafi’i when the latter (rahimahullah) came to Baghdad.

One of Ibn Sabbah’s many accolades is that none besides him read to Imam Shafi’i (rahimahumallah) whilst he was in Baghdad. Due to Ibn Sabbah’s fluency and impeccable mastery of the Arabic language, he would regularly have the honor of reading the lesson to Imam Shafi’i despite the presence of more senior Aimmah such as Imam Ahmad and others (rahimahumullah).

Imam Ibn Sabbah (rahimahullah) passed away in the year 260A.H.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
