Explanation of the Hadith ‘Divorce is disliked by Allah Ta’ala’

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Please provide a brief explanation of the following Hadith:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: ‘The most detestable of all permissible deeds to Allah is divorce’

Answer

The ‘Ulama have provided various different explanations regarding the meaning and implications of this Hadith, among them are the following:

1. ‘Allamah Tibi and others (rahimahumullah) have mentioned:

“Since separating two spouses from one another is amongst the most beloved of actions to Shaytan, it is in turn amongst the most abhorred of actions in the court of Allah Ta’ala.”

2. Some of the ‘Ulama have mentioned that divorce is not disliked in and of itself; it is only the aftermath/repercussions of divorce which is/are detested. This is because many divorces lead towards belittling the sanctified institution of marriage, children and family, the severing of ties, the renewed vulnerability to sin [when one loses their spouse] and so on and so forth.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
