Prayed at the Mosque while needing ghusl…

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Recently I went to the Mosque forgetting that I had to do ghusl. I remembered as soon as the Iqamah started, I felt so ashamed of telling the brothers why I cannot join jama’at that I stood in the jama’at and prayed without an intention. I did not recite anything in the prayer. Am I in great trouble? I have heard that if someone intentionally prays despite knowing that they are in a state of impurity, that would constitute kufr.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

1. It is not permitted to remain in the mosque when in a state of major ritual impurity. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Shurunbulali, Maraqi] This is taken from explicit Prophetic hadith, such as the words of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) , “It is not permitted for a menstruating woman or someone in a state of major ritual impurity (janaba) to enter the mosque.” [Abu Dawud and others]

2. Shyness is from faith, but only when it directs one to the good. As from shyness from people that leads to disobedience of Allah, this is highly blameworthy. The Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) said, “Allah is more deserving of one’s shyness than people are.” [Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and others]

3. It is also impermissible to pray intentionally without being in a state of ritual purity. However, unless one did so out of open disrespect or scorn of the Shariah, it would not amount to disbelief.

4. As such, realize your error; repent; and move on.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said,

“Fear Allah wherever you are; follow a bad deeds with a a good one and it will wipe it out; and deal with people with excellent character.” [at-Tirmidhi, from Abu Dharr and Mu`adh ibn Jabal (Allah be pleased with them)]

Sayyidi Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi said,

“Be with Allah

You will find Allah with you.”

Be with Allahby loving Him, turning to Him in all your affairs, by obeying His commands out of love, thanks and servanthood, You will find Allah with you, for He is “closer to you than your Jugular vein,” and He does not let the efforts of those who seek Him go to waste.
