Looking at the faults of others and forgetting one’s own major shortcomings

I want to know the authenticity and meaning of the following Hadith.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “One of you sees the speck of dirt in his brother’s eye but forgets the tree trunk in his own eye.”

Answer

Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and has declared the Hadith authentic.

(Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 5761)

This Hadith discourages carefully examining and inspecting someone, looking for their every fault [many of them minor], whereas one has many major faults. However, his arrogance blinds him from realising his own faults.

(Refer: Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 9992)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
