A du’a to recite when travelling by ship

Kindly confirm the authenticity of the following:

أمان لأمتي من الغرق إذا ركبوا السفن أن يقولوا: بسم الله الملك {وما قدروا الله حق قدره والأرض جميعا قبضته يوم القيامة والسماوات مطويات بيمينه سبحانه وتعالى عما يشركون} [الزمر: 67] {بسم الله مجراها، ومرساها إن ربي لغفور رحيم} هود: 41

Answer

1) Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded the narration in question on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). ‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared a narrator very weak [matruk].

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 12661, Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 6132. Refer: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 132)

2) Imam Abu Ya’la (rahimahullah) has also recorded a similar narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Husayn ibn ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). However, this chain consists of an extremely weak narrator who has been accused of fabricating Hadith.

(Musnad Abu Ya’la, Hadith: 6781, Kitabu Du’a of Imam Tabarani, Hadith: 803. Refer: Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 5 pg. 134,number: 9060 and Taqribut Tahdhib, 7618)

3) Imam Ibn Qutaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded a third chain on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu). Shaykh Ahmad Siddiq Al Ghumari states, ‘This chain is not continuous and consists of unknown narrators’

(‘Uyunul Akhbar, vol. 1 pg. 137, Al Mudawi, Hadith: 793)

The collective strength of these chains makes it suitable for practice.

Translation

When my ummah board a ship and recite the following, they will be protected from drowning:

2) Surah Hud, Verse: 41

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
