Answer

This narration appears in Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5 pg. 328; Also see: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 278.

The translation is as follows:

Abu Idris Al-Khawlani (rahimahullah) has narrated:

“I entered the masjid of Homs and sat in a gathering wherein there were thirty-two men from the companions of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam).

One of the men amongst them would say: “I heard Rasulullah (sallalalhu ‘alayhi wasallam) [say]”, and then he would narrate [a Hadith].

Thereafter another would say: I heard Rasulullah (sallalalhu ‘alayhi wasallam) [say this]”, and then he would [also] narrate [a Hadith].

Amongst them was a man with beautiful black eyes [i.e. irises] and shining teeth. If they [the attendees] ever had a doubt regarding anything, they would refer it back to him, and were pleased with whatever he had to say about it.

I’ve never sat in any gathering similar to it, neither before nor after.

[Eventually,] the people dispersed. I didn’t know the name of a single man amongst them, nor did I have any knowledge of their whereabouts [i.e. where any of them lived]. Therefore, I spent the night unlike I’ve ever spent the night before and I said [to myself]: “I am a man searching for knowledge, and I sat with the companions of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) without knowing the name of a single man amongst them, nor their whereabouts.”

When I woke up the next morning, I went to the masjid, and all of a sudden, I found myself by the man which they [the attendees] referred to when in doubt! He was performing ruku’ facing one of the pillars of the masjid. So, I sat right by his side [waiting for him to finish].

When he [finished his prayer and] turned, I said: ‘O servant of Allah! By Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah!

He then took hold of my cloak until he drew me near to himself. Thereafter, he asked: “Do you really truly love me for the sake of Allah?”

I replied saying: “Certainly, by Allah! Indeed, I love you for the sake of Allah!

He said: “I have heard Rasulullah (sallalahu ‘alayhi wasallam) say: ‘Verily, those who love one another for the sake of the greatness of Allah will be in the shade of Allah and His ‘Arsh [throne] on such a day where there will be no shade besides His shade’

I then stood up from him [i.e. to leave] when suddenly I was before [another] man from the people that he was with.

I said to him [i.e. this second individual]: “[I just heard] A Hadith which the [first] man narrated.”

He replied: “Surely he would have only told you the truth.”

I then related it to him.

Thereafter, he said: I have heard that along with something even more virtuous than it! I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) reporting from his Rabb [i.e. a Hadith Qudsi], blessed and exalted is He: ‘My love is incumbent upon those who love one another for My sake! My love is incumbent upon those who spend on one another for My sake! My love is incumbent upon those who visit one another for My sake!’

I asked, who are you?
May Allah have mercy upon you!

He replied: I am ‘Ubadah ibn Samit.

I then asked: who is the [first] man?

He replied: Mu’adh ibn Jabal.
