Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) uttering Persian words

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Where can I find this narration, and is it authentic?

Can we say that Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) spoke Persian based on this narration?

Answer

This Hadith is recorded by Imam Ibn Majah (rahimahullah) and Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) with a weak chain.

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3458 and Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2 pg. 390 and 403)

However, Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) is authentically reported to have uttered other words of the Persian language as well.

Refer: Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3070-3072, Chapter on the One who speaks in Persian or any other foreign language.

Translation of the narration in question

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) says, ‘Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) came early and I also did so. I performed Salah and sat down, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) then turned to me and he said: [in Persian] Is your stomach paining?

I [Abu Hurayrah] replied, Yes O Rasulullah.

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, Stand and pray because in Salah there is shifa [cure].

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
