Honouring the guest

Is this narration authentic?

Answer

This narration is recorded in Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Al Mubarak and Sunan Sa’id ibn Mansur with a weak chain.

(Kitabuz Zuhd, Hadith: 614 and Sunan Sa’id ibn Mansur, Hadith: 2437)

The narration is suitable to quote despite the weakness.

Gist of the narration

Two men came to Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Al Harith (radiyallahu ‘anhu). After welcoming them, he offered them the cushion on which he was reclining. They refused saying, ‘We do not want the cushion, we have come to hear something beneficial from you’ to which Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Al Harith (radiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “Whoever does not honour his guest is not from Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) nor Ibrahim (‘alayhis salam). [Glad tidings to the one who breaks his fast on his horse, while in the path of Allah with a simple piece of bread and cool water and woe to those who indulge lavishly, while haughtily ordering around their servants, without remembering Allah Ta’ala.”]

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
