Tawaf-e-Wida’ and its Ruling

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Mufti Yusuf Mullan

My question is regarding Tawaf e Wida’. I wanted to know the status of it i.e. Fard, Wajib, Sunnah or Nafl etc. Secondly, if someone started it and because their coach was leaving, was unable to finish it, what’s the penalty etc? I heard some people saying that this is not compulsory or Wajib. If unable to pay for dum what are the alternatives?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Wa alaikum salaam,

The farewell ‘tawaf or tawaf wida’ is indeed wajib. Missing three or less circuits of it will entail that a sadaqah (2 kg. of wheat or its monetary equivalent) be paid for every missed circuit. Missing four or more entails a ‘dam’, sacrificing a goat or sheep or one seventh of a cow or camel, subject to all the conditions which pertain to animal sacrifices. [Ibn Abideen: 2/553]

And Allah knows best.
