Circumcision is Sunnah for men and it is a noble deed for women

What is the status of the following Hadith?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Circumcision is Sunnah for men and it is a noble deed for women”

Answer

This narration has been recorded as a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) on the authority of the following Sahabah with weak chains:

  1. Usamah Al Hudhali (radiyallahu ‘anhu). (Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5 pg. 75 and As Sunanul Kubra, vol. 8 pg. 325)
  2. Shaddad ibnul Aws (radiyallahu ‘anhu). (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 26998)
  3. Abu Ayyub Al Ansari (radiyallahu ‘anhu). (As Sunanul Kubra, vol. 8 pg. 325)
  4. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). (As Sunanul Kubra, vol. 8 pg. 325)

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has also recorded this narration as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). He states that this version is more correct. (As Sunanul Kubra, vol. 8 pg. 325 and Talkhisul Habir, vol. 6 pg. 2836. Also see: Footnotes of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah on Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 26998)
