Name Israa and Asraa

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Aoa, i want to name my daughter ISRA or ASRA. I want to ask is this name favourable according to meaning & does in quran isra refers to children of bani israel ? Can i use isra or asra as a name JazakAllah

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Israa (إسراء) in the Arabic language means night journey, generally referring to Nabi’s (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) miraculous journey from Makkah to Jerusalem. Accordingly, it is a suitable name.

Asraa (أسرى) means to travel by night. It also means captives. We advise against keeping this word as a name.

Israa-eel is an Aramaic compound word which means servant of Allaah. This and the above are two different words/phrases.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
