Reciting the beginning Verses of Surah Mu’min and Ayatul Kursi

Is this Hadith authentic?

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: من قرأ آية الكرسي وأول حم المؤمن عصم ذلك اليوم من كل سوء

Answer

Imam Ibnus Sunni (rahimahullah) has recorded these words on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) with a weak chain.

(‘Amalul Yawmi Wal Laylah, Hadith: 77)

Translation

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi and the beginning of Surah Hamim Al Mu’min (Surah Ghafir/Mu’min. i.e the first three Verses) will be protected from all evils on that day.”

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has also recorded the Hadith with variation in the wording. The wording of this version is as follows:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whomsoever recites Surah Hamim Al Mu’min (Surah: 40) till ‘ilayhil masir’ (Verse: 3) and Ayatul Kursi in the morning, will be protected by virtue of reciting this till the evening and whomsoever recites it in the evening, will be protected by virtue of reciting this till the morning.”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2879)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith weak.

The Hadith is suitable to quote and practice upon as is the case with Hadiths of this nature.
