In certain Darul ‘Ulums, some Hadith books are taught ‘riwayatan’ and some ‘dirayatan’. What is the difference?

These are two of the three ways of Hadith study.
In the context of your query, ‘dirayatan’ is when Hadith books are taught with complete explanation and commentary of most of the narrations as well as explaining the difference of opinion the Fuqaha (Jurists) had on certain issues.
‘Riwayatan’ refers to reciting the books of Hadith without much explanation and details.
This type of Hadith study is done with those students who have already learned (or are simultaneously learning) the basic translation and explanation of the Hadiths in other similar books.
Those who are not equipped enough in this field should not be exposed to such study.
