Reference for a du’a to be recited in the mornings

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Can you kindly inform if there is any Hadith which shows reading the following du’a morning and evening 3 times:

أَعُوْذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Answer

This du’a is recorded in several Hadith books by different Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) to be recited thrice in the evenings.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, hadith: 3604, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, hadith: 30418, ‘Amalul Yawmi wal laylah of Nasai, hadith: 590-591 & Ibnus Sunni, hadith: 712. Also see Sahih Muslim, hadith: 6819)

One narration in Tabarani and Musnad Abi Ya’la, states that it should be recited in the morning and evening, without specifying a number.

(Al-Mu’jamul Awsat; Majma;uz Zawaid, vol.10 pg.120 & Musnad Abi Ya’la, hadith: 6658. Also see: Sharhul Adhkar, vol.4 pg.95)

‘Allamah Jazari (rahimahullah) has therefore mentioned in Al-Hisnul Hasin that this du’a should be recited once in the mornings and thrice in the evenings.

(Al-Hisnul Hasin, pg.48)

Lastly, ‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has referenced a version of the above Hadith to Musnad Abi Ya’la which states that this du’a should be recited thrice in the morning and evening.

I could not locate these exact words in the mentioned reference.

(Da’il Falah of ‘Allamah Suyuti, hadith: 15)

Summary

One may recite these words thrice in the morning as well as in the evening. Although reciting it once only in the mornings will also suffice.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
