Someone else taking interest loan for us against our will

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf Mangera

My parents-in-law are paying interest on the house we all live in … Does this deprive us of barakah (my husband and myself)? Or is it a sin on us too? It is difficult to move out, and now they are getting another loan for ‘necessary’ extensions that we too will benefit from… Is it wrong to remain there? …

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

In the name of Allah the Inspirer of truth

Since, it was not your intention to prompt them to take an interest loan, you are not blameworthy for them following this path. However, it would be beneficial for you to repent to Allah in any case.

You or your husband are not blameworthy if you do not support their unlawful dealings and upgrades to the house. If you cannot stop them from taking such loans then you must continue to think badly of such dealings. Their action of paying interest is wrong but living in the house is permissible since it is assumed that it is purchased with halal wealth.

However, if and when your husband has the capability to support a place of his own then it would be a good idea to move, if this is at all reasonably possible. We pray to Allah that He make this possible, amin.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam

Abdurrahman Ibn Yusuf
