Praying behind friend who makes hasty wudus

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

In my home, I usually pray Fajr in jamaat with my roommate. I cannot lead in the jamaat because I am a person of excuses (as-haab-ul-adhaar). However, though it is wrong of me to assume, I suspect of my roommate’s wudu because he tends to do it very quickly and I don’t notice much wetness on him when he comes from the washroom. As a Hanafi, I wanted to know what are my various options. I know that if the imam’s wudu is invalid, then so is my salaat. But I don’t know how to ask him if he did his wudu correctly, leaving no room for errors. Today, out of concern for my salaat, I prayed imitating the shafi’i school, because as I was told, the imam’s correct wudu is not a condition for the prayer being accepted. Would in such a difficult situation it be permissible for me to actually lead the other person? What are my options? I would really appreciate some help, because I face this dilemma as often as every morning.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

1. Most people rarely remain chronically excused for a long time. See attached answer(s).

2. The default about all actions is that they are valid and sound unless one is certain otherwise. As such, your friend’s wudu is assumed to be valid. It would be blameworthy to pry into his wudu. See below.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
