Glycerin

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

I have a few questions regarding glycerin and alcohol. I’ve read your answers regarding these topics, but i am still a bit confused. Could you give me the rulings on these issues.. Also I use a hair styling wax that contains glycerin…most likely animal source…is it permissible for me to use this styling wax? I also use a hair gel that contains alcohol and it does not specifiy as to whether it is synthesized alcohol or not. it just says “Alcohol” on the ingredient list. Is it permissible for me to use this gel?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the name of Allah Most Compassionate Merciful

I hope you are fine and in the best of health and iman.

If Glycerine is from an animal source, then it is not permissible. Therefore, the hair styling wax mentioned is not permissible, as it is from an animal source.

In the case of hair gel, which you say is just labelled ‘alcohol’ try to find out the source of it writing to the manufacturers, whether it is synthetic or other. If it is synthetic, then it would be permissible. Please read the following archive on Synthetic alcohol.
