Masjid Board of Trustees who aren’t Practicing Muslims?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf Mangera

I am in a community where the elected officials of the mosque (board of trustees) do not adhere to the quran and sunnah. They don’t have beards, their wives don’t cover and the emphasis is on money and not Ibadah. They are not religious people, they have moved to the US for dunya and they hate Islam according to the Shariah. They prefer the modern westernized Islam. They let Kuffar pray with us (this individual has been in the Jammaat for three years, praying with us, but going to the prison as the head sponsor teaching Christianity!) This individual has not taken his Shahadah but they accept membership fees from this individual. These brothers (board of Trustees) have been in the community over 30 years and have a huge following, in fact the majority of the jammat is just like them. We want to separate but is this Islamic? Please provide an answer for the muminoon who are tired of the events that go on at “Masjid Munafiqoon”

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

A believer needs to be careful as to what he utters with his tongue and avoid making judgments as to what people’s intentions are. This is the better way for one who wants to attain the goodness of this world and the next.

As far as your question is concerned, it would be permissible to establish another masjid in another locality away from the existing masjid. There is no problem with having more than one masjid in a larger town as long as there are no evil intention involved. This would also make it convenient for people on that side of town to congregate. In any case, it would be best to consult a reliable scholar who has knowledge of the area and situation as to where another masjid would be most suited.

And Allah knows best.
