Explanation of the word Mata’

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

وما الحياة الدنيا الا متاع الغرور

Is there a narration which gives the meaning of متاع as sanitary pads? What is the authenticity and reference?

Does it mean this dunya is so impure?

If a narration is not found, what is the explanation given by the ‘Ulama of the word متاع?

Answer

I have not found any interpretation of the word متاع as sanitary pads in the Tafsir books that I have referred to.

The Mufassirun have offered the following interpretations for متاع:

1. An item that a person uses or derives benefit from, like any sort of utensil.
2. Goods which a buyer regrets buying, like when he realises that he has fallen prey to false advertising.
3. An item that is extremely fragile, like glass.
4. Something that will not last, like the colour of a flower, or padkos.

(Refer: Al-Bahrul Muhit, Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Ruhul Ma’ani, Tafsir Samarqandi; Bahrul ‘Ulum and Futuhul Ghayb: Surah Ala ‘Imran, Verse: 185)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
