Is this Hadith authentic?
Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Nabi Dawud was forgiven on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, thus, whoever fasts on this day sixty (60) years of his sins will be expiated.”
Answer
This narration appears in Musnadul Firdaws. However, the chain consists of a fabricator. It is therefore not suitable to quote.
(Dhaylul La-Alil Masnu’ah, vol. 1 pg. 468/469, Hadith: 567-568, Tanzihush Shari’ah, vol. 2 pg. 165)
The following authentic virtue should be quoted instead:
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was asked regarding fasting on the day of ‘Arafah. He replied, “[Fasting] will expiate the sins of the past and future year…”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1162)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
