Is Masjidul Aqsa regarded to be the third Haram?

Many people call Masjidul Aqsa the third ‘Haram’? Is this established from Hadith?

Answer

A Haram or sanctuary is a piece of land wherein it is not permissible to kill nor is it permissible to uproot any of the plantation/vegetation. This is the technical term of the word Haram and [in the Hanafi Madhab] it only applies to Makkah Mukarramah.

The word Haram is also translated as ‘sacred/respected place’. Madinah Munawwarah is referred to as Haram in this sense of the word.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1867, Sharhu Ma’anil Athar, vol. 4 pg. 191-196)

Perhaps this is also the reason for Masjidul Aqsa’ being referred to as Haram. i.e, It is also a sacred place. These three Masjids (Makkah, Madinah and Aqsa) are often mentioned together in Hadiths.

It should be noted that Masjidul Aqsa certainly has virtues over other Masjids of the world as the reward for Salah performed there is multiplied.

Kindly refer to a Mufti/Darul Ifta for further clarification.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
