The curse of Sayyiduna Sa’id ibn Zayd (radiyallahu’anhu)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

I came across in a lecture that a woman (by name of Asma) got into a land dispute with Sayyiduna Sa’id Ibn Zayd (radiyallahu’anhu) regarding a piece of land. Eventually Sayyiduna Sa’id Ibn Zayd (radiyallahu’anhu) relented and even though he believed it was his land, he let Asma have the land but he made a du’a to Allah that if she was of the liars and making false claims then she should die on the very land she has falsely taken from Sayyiduna Sa’id Ibn Zayd (radiyallahu’anhu). Eventually, the woman fell into a well in that very land she obtained. Could you please quote the full narration/story(because I might have missed some points) from beginning to end with the source and authenticity?

Answer

This incident is authentic as it is recorded by Imams Bukhari and Muslim (rahimahumallah) in their Sahih.

The lady who disputed with him was: Arwa [bint Unays], and not Asma.

Sayyiduna Sa’id ibn Zayd (radiyallahu’anhu) was a senior Sahabi, from the ‘Asharah Mubash-sharah (the ten who were collectively given the glad tidings of Jannah) (radiyallahu’anhum).

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded the following version of this incident:

A woman by the name of Arwa disputed a piece of land with Sayyiduna Sa’id ibn Zayd (radiyallahu’anhu).

Sayyiduna Sa’id ibn Zayd (radiyallahu’anhu) said: ‘Let her to have it. I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) say:

‘Whoever wrongfully usurps land equal to a palm span [even] will be yoked with it together with the rest of the seven earths on the day of Qiyamah.’

Thereafter Sayyiduna Said ibn Zayd (radiyallahu’anhu) made the following du’a:

‘O Allah, If this woman is lying, then take away her eye-sight, and let her die in her home.’

The narrator says: ‘I saw her when she became blind, feeling the walls [when walking]. She would say: ‘The curse of Sa’id ibn Zayd got me.’

Once, while walking on her property, she fell into the well, which became her grave.’

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1610)

A shorter version of this Hadith appears in Sahih Bukhari as well, Hadith: 3198.
