Question

Kindly provide the translation of this Hadith:

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration. The translation is as follows:

Malik ad-Dar who was appointed by ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) as a treasurer said: “People were afflicted by drought during the reign of ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu). A man went to the grave of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, seek rain for your ummah for they have perished.’ Someone appeared in this man’s dream and said, ‘Go to ‘Umar, convey greeting to him and inform him that you will be granted water and tell him, ‘You must be clever, you must be clever!’ The man went and told ‘Umar. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) cried and said: ‘O my Rabb, I will spare no effort except in what escapes my power!’”

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 32665)
