The du’a when leaving a gathering

Is this du’a authentic?

Du’a when leaving a gathering:

Glory be to You, O Allah, with Your praises. I bear witness that there is no Deity besides You. I beg Your forgiveness and repent to You.

Answer

This du’a is known as ‘kaffaratul majlis’ [The du’a which atones for any futile talk in a gathering]. The Hadith has been recorded in many Hadith collections, on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Barzah Al Aslami and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

Among them:

  1. Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3433
  2. Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 4826
  3. Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2 pg. 494/495
  4. Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1 pg. 537

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic (hasanun sahihun gharib). Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabi concurs.

The Arabic text of the du’a:

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

Subhanaka allahumma wa bihakdika ash-hadu al la ilaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
