The last words of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)

I hear there is Hadith where Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) heard Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)’s last words before passing away?

Please share the Hadith, and the grading of it.

Answer

You are probably referring to the Hadith recorded by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) which Imam Bukhari has recorded under the chapter ‘The last words of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)’. The Hadith is as follows:

Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) reports:

“When Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was in good health, he used to say, ‘No Nabi passes away until he sees his abode in Jannah. He is then given a choice.’

When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was passing away and his head was on my thigh, he fainted. When he recovered, his eyes were fixed on the roof of the house and then he said, ‘Allahummar rafiqal a’ala’ (O Allah, with the Highest Companions).

‘I said, ‘This [means] he is not going to choose to stay with us!’ and I realised this is what he had spoken about/referred to that it when he was healthy.’

Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) says, “The last words he uttered were, ‘Allahummar rafiqal a’ala)’”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 4463 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2444)

Note: Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) had offered various other advice before passing away. These are regarded as ‘among’ the last few advices Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) had offered’. The Hadith of Sayyidatuna ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) is the last words that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) had uttered.

(Refer: Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 1463 and 7191)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
