Folding clothes

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I’ve heard that it is Sunnah to fold the clothes and not to hang them. Is there any Hadith about this?

Answer

I have not seen this mentioned as an actual Sunnah.

However, Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded the following from Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu’anha):

‘Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) had a [special] pair of clothes which he would wear on Fridays. After that we would fold them [and store them] till the next Jumu’ah.’

(Al-Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 3540, Al-Mu’jamus Saghir, vol.1 pg.152. Also see Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.2 pg.175, Al-Matalibul ‘Aliyah, Hadith: 710 & Al-Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 676)

The chain for this is very weak, and would therefore need more substantiation for it to be rendered a sunnah.

Note: This narration does not state that the clothes should not be hanged.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
