Abstain from opulence

What is the source of this Hadith?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Abstain and be wary of opulence, for certainly the servants of Allah are not from the opulent ones”

Answer

Imam Ahmad, Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) and others have recorded this narration. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) told Sayyiduna Mu’adh ibn Jabal (radiyallahu ‘anhu) when sending him to Yemen, “Abstain from opulence, for certainly the servants of Allah are not from among the opulent”

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5 pg. 243 and Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 5766)

‘Allamah Mundhiri and Hafiz Haythami (rahimahumallah) have declared the chain of Imam Ahmad reliable.

(Targhib, vol. 3 pg. 142 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 250)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
