Is it permissible to celebrate birthdays while not doing any of the actions of the non-Muslims?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

There is no problem with annually celebrating the day that corresponds to one’s birthday, on the condition that the celebration does not include what the Sacred Law warns of. Some examples are: playing forbidden musical instruments like Kuba1, uncovering the nakedness in the presence of those whose seeing one is impermissible, drinking wine, and the presence of statues of creatures with souls, etc.

1 Kuba, also known as Tabla is a long drum with a narrow middle.
