What is Eman?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Tafseer Raheemi

Question

What is Eman?

Answer

Eman is to believe that:

  1. God exists, He is one and has all good attributes and is free from all faults and blemishes. He is powerful, He has full knowledge of everything, He sees and hear’s everything. He has no partners and he has no son.
  2. To believe that he has created a creation called Angels. They were created from Noor, light. They always obey Allah and fulfill the duties assigned to them. At the same time, they keep busy in glorifying and praising Allah.
  3. To believe Allah selected some human beings to be his messengers. He entrusted them with the divine message. They themselves were not divine but they were inspired with the divine message. They delivered the message and returned to Allah who will reward them for their efforts. They are knows as Prophets and Messengers.
  4. To believe Allah revealed some books to these messengers and told them and their followers to practice on what’s been instructed in the books. Four books are most famous: Tawrah, Zabur, Injeel, Quran.Quran is the final book. It is the word of Allah, revealed to the final prophet of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. It has been preserved in its original form, word for word.
  5. To believe in the last day and the life after death. By last day we mean that just as today it’s Friday and tomorrow will be Saturday, a time will come when the whole universe and whatever it contains will perish and that will be the last day of this world. There will be no Saturday after that. The sun will be extinguished, the stars will be exterminated, the mountains will be annihilated, the oceans will be finished, the buildings, houses. Humans, animals, birds, fishes and every living creature will face death. Nothing and no one will remain besides Allah S.W.T. and whom he wishes. Then, after a certain period, the whole creation will be resurrected and gathered before the court of Allah. Reckoning will take place and rewards and punishment will be handed out. Reward will be in the form of Jannah (heaven), and punishment will be in the form of Jahannam (Hell).
  6. To Believe in Taqdeer (destiny, fate). Whatever happens to me, whether good or bad, is from Allah. For good we should thank Allah, and for bad, we should seek the help of Allah.

When you have firm faith in the above mentioned, you are a Mu’min and a Muslim. Now you have to practice on the instructions given by Allah. Learn your religion and then put it into practice. Do what you have to do and stay well away from what you should avoid. The more you practice, the more inner peace, tranquility peace of mind you will find.

May Allah give us correct belief and give us the ability to practice and keep us steadfast upon Sirate Mustaqeem till the day we die. Ameen
