Fasting While in Travel

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum,

I am traveling from Chicago to Las Vegas during the month of Ramadhan for a conference, which will last for 3 days. I will be standing on my company’s booth speaking with several visitors. My plane journey will start a little late in the day and I will land late at night in Las Vegas and after spending 3 days I will board a plane around the Iftar time for coming back to Chicago.

My question is, is it permissible to skip fasting for these day 4 days while I will be in travel?

JazakAllahu Khaira

There is a provision of permissibility to not fast while in travel however the missed fasts shall be made up for later by keeping that number of fasts. However, if there is a chance of refraining from excessive difficulty during the travel, then it is better to fast. Second point is that the day you are starting your travel from home, if your intention is to travel after dawn, then you will be considered muqeem at that time (i.e. stationed at your location of origin and not in transit), and therefore, it is necessary to fast that day and to take it to completion. If one has to break a fast due to hardship in one’s travel then only qadha (of that one fast) will be mandatory and not the kaffarah.
