Firm Resolve in Intention for Prayer

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I’m a bit confused about the fact that we need to have a “firm resolve” as part of our intention for prayer. What does this mean and how can we not have a firm resolve?

Also, I read in the Reliance some time back that in the Shafi’i madhab if a Musalli says to himself “if such and such happens then I will end my prayer” then the prayer is invalidated even if he continues. I asked a hanafi Indian scholar in this country about this and he said that this does NOT invalidate the salah. Is this correct?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

ikum assalam,
One should not make such an intention, because if it entails one’s resolve not being firm (which is inevitable), it would make one’s intention invalid. If your intention was invalid [normally very hard], then you didn’t even START the prayer…
Wassalam,
Faraz.
