Answer
Waalaikumussalam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
Bismillahir rahmaanir rahim.

Respected Sister,

Allah SWT has stated in the Holy Quraan:

‘And walk not in the earth exultant (showing haughtiness and arrogance). Lo! Thou canst not rend the earth (by means of your arrogance), nor canst thou stretch to the height of the hills nor reach the height of the mountains.’ (Surah Al-Israa’, verse 37)

In another verse:

‘And tell believing women to lower their gaze, away from what is not lawful for them to look at…And that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments…’ (Surah An-Nur, verse 31)

Chapter On The Walk Of Rasulullah SAW:

Ibrahim bin Muhammad says: ‘When ‘Ali RA. described Rasulullah SAW, he used to say: ‘When Rasulullah SAW walked, he lifted his leg with vigour. He did not drag his feet on the ground like women do. When he walked, because of the speed and force of the legs, it seemed as if he was descending from a high place.'” (Shama’il Tirmidhi : 117)

Chapter On The Noble Features Of Rasulullah SAW:

Reported from Hassan bin ‘Ali RA: I asked my uncle Hind bin Abi Haalah (Faatimah RA’s step brother) about the noble features of Rasulullah SAW…’His blessed sight was focused more to the ground than towards the sky (unless awaiting for wahi (revelation))…’ (Shama’il Tirmidhi : 7)

As the followers of Nabi SAW, we should try our very best in following Nabi SAW’s footsteps – eating habits, drinking, walking, manner of speech, sleeping, adorning oneself etc. From the actions of Nabi SAW a certain nur (illumination) and ra’b (awe) could be seen and felt from just by looking at Nabi SAW. Thus, we are often advised by the ‘ulamaa to adhere strictly to the sunan (pl. of sunnah) of Nabi SAW to live a life of a complete mu’min (believer).

It is true that from the manner a person walks, others are able to have a general picture of the person’s characteristics. Therefore, it only befits us to walk (and do other things) in accordance to the Quraan and sunnah of Nabi SAW.

Allah SWT has commanded women (and men) to lower their gazes lest their gazes would fall on something unlawful. This was one of the practices of Nabi SAW too when Nabi SAW used to walk as mentioned in the hadith above. Another thing to keep in mind is women should not strike their feet when walking in such a manner that attention will be drawn towards their hidden ornaments. Once again, this is a clear command of Allah SWT to the believing women when they walk.

Therefore, a woman should walk in such a manner that will not attract unwanted attention but at the same time be alert of their surroundings. ‘He did not drag his feet on the ground like women do’ implies that women tend to walk with their feet dragged on the ground. A woman should not flaunt her beauty to others while she walks as this can be interpreted as a sign of pride as well.

Insya Allah by practising the sunnah of Nabi SAW and also obeying Allah SWT’s commandments, it shall not create pride in oneself but rather extinguish it from one’s heart.
