Du’aa After Fardh Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu

I hope Mufti Saheb is in the best of health and spirit.

For quite some time now, the Mas’ala of collective Du’aa after the Fardh Salawaat has become an issue of contention. Generally, our Ulamaa are of the view that it is permissible and in fact Mustahab. However, as the Fiqhi principle is clear that any such act if it is considered necessary by the masses, it reaches the boundary of innovation (Bid’ah). Therefore, the Fuqahaa generally state that in the light of such fear, such acts should be left out occasionally, like the Masnoon Qiraats of Fajr on Friday, etc.

Together with this, Hikmat demands that the public first be educated on this. Thereafter, the Aimmah may begin to occasionally leave it out, or else the masses may become confused and there is a fear of Fitnah. In the light of the above, kindly state:

1. If the above is correct and what is the way forward. How and where do we begin?

Ps. Presently, all the 3 Masaajid of Darul Uloom Deoband do not have collective Du’aa after the Fardh Salaat.

2. If this is not your view, then kindly explain your stance in light of the current situation, i.e. what is the status of collective Du’aa after every Fardh Salaat and should it be done loudly or softly.

A lot has been said regarding the congregational supplication after the obligatory prayers. As documented in Al-Urf-us-Shathi, the Muhaqqiqeen says that the congregational supplication is not established from Ahaadith. Those jurists who declare its permissibility look at general proofs and the aspect of educating the masses with regards to supplication; thus they declare its permissibility. (Imdaadul Fataawaa, Imdaadul Mufteen, Fataawaa Mahmoodiyah, Fataawaa Rahimiyyah).

Hadhrat Mufti Abdur Raheem has written a beautiful documentation regarding this supplication. Kindly check Fataawaa Rahimiyyah Vol.4, Page 362 and Vol.7, Page 238. For this reason, in our opinion, declaring the collective supplication as an innovation is not correct. Being constant on either a Sunnah or Nafl act is not an innovation. If a person does not give them the status of Fardh and he does not have the understanding that they are Laazim, but his entire life, he does it understanding them as Sunnah or Nafl, then he would not be called an innovator.

Our opinion regarding this Mas’ala is that the masses should be educated by telling them that after the completion of the Salaat, joining the imam in Du’aa is not a part of the Salaat and also it is not a necessary part of the Jamaat. The congregational prayer terminates after the completion of the salaams. The follower of the Imam can either make his own supplication before or after the supplication of the imam. He can begin his Sunnahs before the supplication of the imam.

With this, the imam should also make a silent Du’aa twice or thrice a week. Nothing should be said at the beginning or the end of the Du’aa. Occasionally, only the beginning and ending words should be said and the rest of the Du’aa should be made silent. Occasionally, the imam should raise his voice to such an extent whereby those engaged in prayers are not disturbed, whilst making the supplication. Besides this, the Imam of the locality is aware of the people’s level of Deen, knowledge and oppositions. The imams should understand this Mas’ala and they should apply wisdom in acting upon it so as not to create any Fitnah. It is difficult to make the conditions of one locality an example for the conditions of another locality.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
