Charity by means of reciting Durud

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Is there any Hadith which mentions that a person who recites the following Durud (salutation):

Allahumma salli ‘ala Sayyidina Muhammadin ‘abdika wa rasulika wa salli ‘alal mu-minina wal mu-minati wal muslimina wal muslimati

will become excessively rich?

Answer

Perhaps you are referring to the following Hadith, recorded by Imam ibn Hibban (rahimahullah), on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu), that Rasulullah (sallalalhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:

‘Any Muslim that does not have charity [to hand out], then he should recite [the following] in his du’a:

Allahumma salli ‘ala Sayyidina Muhammadin ‘abdika wa rasulika wa salli ‘alal mu-minina wal mu-minati wal muslimina wal muslimati,

for it will surely be a means of Zakah [i.e. charity, for him]…’

(Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith: 517; Also see: Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2686, Al-Qawlul Badi’, pg. 274, Mirqat, Hadith: 222, Virtues of Salat ‘Alan Nabi – sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam – of Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyya Al-Kandehlawi, pgs. 39-41, and here)

The majority of the commentators have indicated that the word ‘Zakah’, in context of this Hadith, has been used to refer to charity.

(Refer: Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith: 517, Jila-ul Afham, pg. 515, Mawaridudh Dham-an, Hadith: 832, Al-Liwa-ul Mu’allim, pg. 230, Al-Qawlul Badi’, pgs. 274-275, Ad-Durrul Mandud, pg. 174, Virtues of Salat ‘Alan Nabi – sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam – of Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyya Al-Kandehlawi, pgs. 39-41, As-Salatu ‘Alan Nabi – sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam – of Shaykh Abdullah Sirajud Din, pgs. 111-112)

They have explained this Hadith to signify that the one who does not possess sufficient wealth [to give in charity] can still reap the benefits of giving charity through the recital of Salutations.

(Virtues of Salat ‘Alan Nabi – sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam – of Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyya Al-Kandehlawi, pg. 41)

Nonetheless, from a linguistic point of view, some of the ‘Ulama have explained that the word Zakah has several meanings, of which growth in wealth, plentifulness and barakah are included.

(Faydhul Qadir, Hadith: 2950, and As-Salatu ‘Alan Nabi – sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam – of Shaykh Abdullah Sirajud Din, pgs. 110-111)

It is understood from other Hadiths of Rasulullah (sallalalhu ‘alayhi wasallam) that the recitation of Durud (salutations) assists one in all concerns pertaining to both the Dunya and Akhirah.

(Refer: Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2457; Also see: here)

Although I have not come across any specific form of salutations to increase one’s sustenance. One who wishes to recite this particular Durud [or any other version] with the intention of attaining barakah in his wealth, grow it and purify it, may do so based on the broader benefits of salutations upon Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
