The reliability of the Hadith narrator Hisham ibn Hassan

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Is Hisham ibn Hassan an acceptable narrator even if he reports from Ibn Sirin (rahimahullah)?

Answer

Hisham ibn Hassan Al Azdi, Abu ‘Abdillah Al Basri is among the most reliable of narrators from Imam Muhammad ibn Sirin (rahimahullah) -من أثبت الناس في ابن سيرين-. His narrations from Ibn Sirin (rahimahullah) are therefore highly credible.

He has reported Hadith from Hasan al Basri, ‘Ikrimah, Muhammad, Anas and Hafsah Banu Sirin, Hisham ibn ‘Urwah (rahimahumullah) and others.

Shu’bah, Hammad ibn Salamah, Hammad ibn Zayd, Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, Sufyan Thawri, Hafs ibn Giyath, Ibn Jurayj, Ibn ‘Ulayyah (rahimahumullah) and others have reported Hadith from him. Imams Bukhari, Muslim, Nasai, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah (rahimahumullah) have all recorded his Hadiths.

Imams Ibn Ma’in, ‘Ijli, Ibn Sa’d, Ibn Hibban, Ibn Shahin, ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahumullah) have declared him reliable (thiqah). Imam Shu’bah (rahimahullah) has criticised him. However, ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has rejected this criticism and states that this was an error on his part.

On the topic of ‘Most Reliable Narrators’ from their respective teachers, see the relevant section in my book: Al-Muyassirat. Hisham Ibn Hassan is mentioned therein as well.
