‘Ali’s (radiyallahu ‘anhu) du’a in qawmah when getting up from ruku’

Question

Is this du’a of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) authentic?

Bi haw lil lahi wa quwwatihi aqumu wa aq’ud

Answer

This narration is recorded in the following sources, with slight variation in the wording:

  1. Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 2562
  2. Kitabud Du’a of Imam Tabarani, Hadith: 576
  3. As Sunanul Kubra of Imam Bayhaqi, vol. 2 pg. 96

Harith reports that when Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) would say ‘سمع الله لمن حمده’ [i.e. raise his head from ruku’], he would say:

اللهُمَّ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ، اللهُمَّ بِحَوْلِكَ وَقُوَّتِكَ أَقُومُ وَأَقْعُدُ

Allahumma Rabbana wa lakal hamdu Allahumma bihawlika wa quwwatika aqumu wa aq’udu

(O Allah, our Rabb! All praise belongs to you. O Allah! Only through Your Might and Power do I stand and sit)

The chain of narrators is weak.

(Refer: Al Muhaddhab of ‘Allamah Dhahabi, Hadith: 2342, Mizanul I’itidal, vol. 1 pg. 399, number: 1551 and Al Kashif: 859)

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
