Hold fast to the Quran and Sunnah and you will not stray

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْفَقِيهُ، أَنْبَأَ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ، وَأَخْبَرَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ الشَّعْرَانِيُّ، ثنا جَدِّي، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ ثَوْرِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الدِّيلِيِّ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ، فَقَالَ: قَدْ يَئِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ بِأَنْ يُعْبَدَ بِأَرْضِكُمْ وَلَكِنَّهُ رَضِيَ أَنْ يُطَاعَ فِيمَا سِوَى ذَلِكَ مِمَّا تُحَاقِرُونَ مِنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ، فَاحْذَرُوا يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمْ مَا إِنِ اعْتَصَمْتُمْ بِهِ فَلَنْ تَضِلُّوا أَبَدًا كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَسُنَّةَ نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ،

Answer

Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullallah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) addressed the masses on the occasion of the farewell pilgrimage, saying: “Shaytan has lost all hope that he be worshiped on this earth, but he is still content to be obeyed in ways that you deem to be insignificant. O People! Be aware that if you hold fast upon the legacy that I have left behind for you, you will never ever go astray! [This legacy is] The Quran and the Sunnah of your Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam).

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has stated all the narrators to be reliable and ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) agrees.

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) also pointed out other reliable supports for this narration.
