Books that assist in grading Hadiths

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What are some resources which you recommend for a non Hadith specialist student/scholar to consult in order to determine the statements of the muhadithun regarding the gradings of particular Hadith (in terms of authenticity)?

Answer

A non specialist is actually encouraged to consult the specialists.

Hereunder are a few examples of such books:

1. At Targhib wat Tarhib,

2. Majma’uz Zawaid,

3. Mukhtasar Ithafus Sadah,

4. Al Mughni (Takhrijul Ihya),

5. Ihtafus Sadatil Muttaqin (Sharhul ihya),

6. Fathul Bari (Sharhul Bukhari),

7. Mawsu’atul Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al Hadithiyyah,

8. Al Maqasidul Hasanah,

9. Faydul Qadir (Sharh Jami’us Saghir)

10. Atharus Sunan,

11. i’laus Sunan, and others.

In addition to the above, there are numerous other resources that could be referred to when sourcing the grade of a Hadith. However, having the names of these books isn’t sufficient, as one needs to understand the technical terms that are used in these books as well. Similarly, in the event of difference of opinion, one needs to be able to reconcile or prefer a ruling over another in light of sound principles. These details cannot be explained on a platform like this.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
