A du’a for when entering the Masjid

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What is the authenticity of this du’a?

اعوذ بالله…وًسلطانه القديم

Answer

This du’a has been reported as one to be recited when entering the masjid.

The full wording of the du’a is as follows:

أعوذ بالله العظيم وبوجهه الكريم وسلطانه القديم من الشيطان الرجيم

A’udhu billahil ‘azimi wa bi wajhihil karimi wa sultanihil qadimi minash shaytanir rajim.

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu’anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would recite this du’a when he would enter the masjid, and that He (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘When one recites this, Shaytan says: He has been guarded from me for the rest of the day.’

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 467)

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) has declared the chain as good (jayyid).

(Al-Adhkar, Hadith: 86)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
