‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) suggests consulting the wives of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) over a Juristic ruling

What is the authenticity of the narration wherein Sayyiduna ‘Umar and Sayyiduna Zayd ibn Thabit (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) were discussing a ruling regarding ghusl after intercourse. After consulting senior Sahabah they could not reach a verdict.

Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) suggested consulting the wives of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) as they would have knowledge regarding this issue. Sayyidah Hafsah (radiyallahu ‘anha) was consulted but she also was unaware. Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) was then consulted. She had knowledge of this and she passed the verdict.

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) and others have recorded this incident. The narration has been recorded through other chains as well. Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) states that the Hadith is authentic (sahih).
