Another question on amulets (ta’widh)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I found different reports about the amulet (ta’widh) and I didn’t understand.

The permissibility of ta’widh is supported by several companions and great Tabi`in,

But I read in a book the following report:

Ibrahim Nakha’i (rahimahullah) says : They (the Companions) disapproved all amulets (with Quran or without Quran) (Musannaf ibn Abi Shayba vol.8 pg.15 , or vol.8 pg.14 Hadith: 23918 Al Faruq edition)

How we should understand that?

Were the companions for or against the ta’widh?

Answer

The report from Ibrahim Nakha’i (rahimahullah) does not refer to ta’widh. Therefore Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) did not cite it in the Chapter of Ta’widh.

Rather, he rightly cited it in the Chapter of Tamaim.

Ibrahim Nakha’is statement is actually referring to tamaim, which was the Arabian habit of hanging certain beads around the necks of their children, with the false belief that these beads would ward away evil.

(An-Nihayah, vol.1 pg.196-197)

Ta’widh isn’t the same thing. See here for a detailed answer on the ruling of ta’widh.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
