The du’a whilst eating

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Are there any du’as mentioned in the Hadith that are to be read whilst eating? For instance,

Allahumma Barik Lana Fima Razaqtana Wa Qina Adhaban Nar

and

Allahumma Lakal Hamdu Wa Lakash Shukr

Answer

1. The first du’a you question has Not been mentioned for recital during meals. Rather is has been mentioned as what to recite when the food is presented.

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibnul ‘As (radiyallahu’anhuma) reports that when the food was brought close to Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) he would recite:

Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina adhaban nar

(‘Amalul yawmi wal laylah of Ibnus Sunni, Hadith: 457)

The chain for this is declared very weak by the classical Muhaddithun. See: Al- Futuhatur Rabbaniyyah, vol.5 pg.178.

2. The second du’a is popularly recited during meals.

Although I haven’t seen these exact words in the Hadith, it seems like they were formulated to practice on the following Hadith in which we are encouraged to praise Allah Ta’ala after each morsel and sip.

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) said:

Allah Ta’ala loves that his slave praises him for every morsel and sip he takes

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2734)

In light of this Hadith and the fact that we ought to be thanking Allah Ta’ala for all bounties, there will be no harm in reciting these words (Allahumma lakal hamdu wa lakash shukr) during meals.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
