Authenticity of a Hadith on istighfar

Kindly verify the authenticity of the following hadith:

It is a fortunate person who (on the Day of Judgement) finds in his record many supplications for forgiveness

Answer

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Busr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallalahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘Glad tidings (tuba) for the one who (on the day of judgement) finds an abundance of istighfar in his book of deeds’.

(Sunan ibn Majah, Hadith: 3818)

‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) and ‘Allamah Busiri (rahimahullah) have both declared the above Hadith as authentic (sahih). Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) has declared the above Hadith as good (jayyid).

(Targhib, vol. 2 pg. 468, Misbahus Zujajah, Hadith: 1339 and Al Adhkar, hadith: 1209)

Note

The arabic word used in this Hadith is ‘tuba’. Some Muhaddithun are of the opinion that ‘tuba’ refers to a tree in Jannah or Jannah itself. However the meaning that was cited in our translation above, ie. Glad tidings seems to be the most likely meaning here.

(See Al Futuhatur Rabbaniyyah, vol. 3 pg. 700)
