Sayyiduna Ali’s famous statement regarding loving and hating in moderation

Is the following a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) or the statements of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu)?

“Love your beloved moderately, perhaps someday you will hate/dislike him, hate whom you hate moderately, perhaps he becomes your beloved someday.”

Answer

Senior Muhaddithun, like Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) have stated that the correct version of this narration is recorded as the statement of Sayyiduna Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu). Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has also recorded this narration in Al Adabul Mufrad as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Ali. This narration should therefore be quoted as such.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 1997, Al Adabul Mufrad, Hadith:  1321, Sharhus Sunnah, under Hadith: 3481 and Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 2 pg. 233, -number: 3452)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
