Sunnah prayer before zuhr

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

it happens some times that i am praying the sunnah for duhr prayer and the fard prayer starts in masjid. i know that if the fard prayer starts then if we are in the first rakah we should end the prayer in second rakah and if we are in 3rd we should complete the 4. but my question is….i have heard that according to the hanafi madhab you are not supposed to pray the sunnah that come before the fard after it (i dont know if this is right or not) so if this is the case then do i completely miss the sunnah before duhr as i was not able to complete before it….?
there is another thing that happened recently i was not able to pray the 2 rakah sunnah prayer of duhr earlier so i had to pray it late but when i was praying i could hear the azaan for asr going on in a mosque very far away but in the mosque i pray the azaan only started after i had ended my 2 rakah sunah so is my prayer valid in this case….?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

One should commence the 4 Rakats Sunnah of Dhuhr only if he is certain that he will manage to complete all four Rakats before the Fardh. In spite of that, if the Fardh commences before he can complete the four Rakats, then he should complete the four Rakats first. However, if he terminates the prayer after two Rakats, the prayer will be valid, but it will be considered as Nafl.

The four Rakats of Sunan before Dhuhr are a stressed upon Sunnah (Sunnah al-Muakkadah). If a person misses the four Rakats of Sunan before Dhuhr, he should pray them after praying the two Rakats Sunan after Dhuhr. Hence, he will pray four Fardh, then two Sunan, and then the four Sunan. Praying it after the two Sunan will be considered as Ada (praying it on time).

Regarding the end time of Dhuhr, you should ask your local Hanafi scholars. They will be able to advise whether the Adhan which you heard was probably from a Masjid which was following the Shafi Madhab.
