Mixing Sunnahs in Prayers

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

A new sister in Islam just started praying and mixes her sunnahs from different madhhabs. She follows the hanafi madhhab in most of everything, but prays w/ a mixture of shafi’i sunnahs such as raising her hands before and after the ruku, leaving the index finger raised after tashahud till the salaam, raising her hands high when making du’a and not wiping them over the face at the end, etc. Is this correct? She is confused after listening to other people’s comments on this and watching the hanafi way of praying.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

This is not a ‘big deal’, esp. for a new convert. However, it would be good to recommend that she read the excellent articles on madhhabs (and much more!) at Sidi Mas’ud Khan’s site: http://www.masud.co.uk

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
