Kindly translate the following Hadith:

أن معاذ بن جبل أراد سفرا فقال يا نبي الله أوصني قال اعبد الله لا تشرك به شيئا قال يا نبي الله زدني قال إذا أسأت فأحسن قال يا رسول الله زدني قال استقم وليحسن خلقك

Answer

Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibnul ‘As (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

(Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 524)

Translation

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibnul ‘As (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that when Sayyiduna Mu’adh ibn Jabal (radiyallahu ‘anhu) intended to depart [for Yemen], he said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Give me some advice.’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Worship Allah and do not ascribe any partners to Him.’ Mu’adh (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said, ‘Give me more advice O Nabi of Allah.’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘When you commit an evil deed, then follow it up with a good deed.’ Mu’adh (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said, ‘O Nabi of Allah, give me more advice.’ Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Remain steadfast and your character should be excellent.’”
