The virtue of walking to the Masjid for Salah

Question

Is there any mention in Hadith that for each step one takes to the Masjid, a sin is forgiven and a reward is written?

Answer

The narration recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim states that a person should leave home with wudu to secure this reward.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

When one performs wudu at home thoroughly and leaves for the Masjid solely to offer salah [in congregation], for every step taken towards the Masjid [in this state of wudu], one stage is elevated in the Hereafter and one sin is forgiven.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 647 and Sahih Muslim 1504)

Other versions recorded in Sahih Muslim state the additional virtue of also acquiring one reward for each step.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 654 and 666)

Imams Nasai and Ahmad (rahimahumallah) have also recorded a similar narration:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“When a man goes out of his house to his Masjid one foot records a good deed and the other erases a bad deed.”

(Sunan Nasai; Al Mujtaba, Hadith: 705, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2 pg. 319. See here)
