Authenticity of the du’a ‘Ya Man Azharal Jamil’

I want to ask about the Du’a recorded by Imam Hakim in his Mustadrak: “Ya man azhar aljamil…”

In Al-Asma wal-Sifat of Imam Bayhaqi he states:

“wa huwa du’aun hasanun wa fee sihatihi ‘an Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) nazarun”

The narration states that Jibrail had come down and told Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) that Allah has sent down a gift to you, the gift being this du’a.

Is this authentic?

Answer

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as you have stated.

(Al Mustadrak, vol. 1 pg. 544)

In addition to Imam Bayhaqi’s (rahimahullah) reservation in its authenticity that you have cited, Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has also severely criticised this narration because of a particular narrator, stating that he has fabricated this Hadith.

(Refer: Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 1 pg. 155, number 514)

The du’a may be recited since the meaning is correct, without attributing it to Allah or Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and without deeming the du’a to be a gift from Allah.

As you have quoted, Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah)  states that the [wording of the] du’a is indeed good (du’aun hasanun).

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
