The slaughtering of death on the day of Qiyamah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Regarding the following Verse of Surah Naba, verse: 40:

‘Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, “Oh, I wish that I were dust’.

I’ve heard that in the Akhirah, when all those who are to enter Jannah would have entered therein, Allah Ta’ala will call all of mankind and a ram will be killed to signify that there is no more death and those in Jannah will remain therein and those in Jahannam will remain therein forever. Then the disbelievers will say the above: ‘O! I wish that I were dust!’

Would you please verify this Tafsir and/or Hadith.

Answer

Perhaps you are referring to one of the following two Hadiths:

1. Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu) has reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:

‘Death will be brought in the form of a white ram having black spots after which an announcer will announce: “O inhabitants of Jannah!”

They will then raise their heads and look.

He [i.e. the announcer] will say: “Do you all recognize this?”

They will reply: “Yes, this is death.”

Thereafter he will announce: “O inhabitants of the Fire [i.e. Jahannam]!”

They will then raise their heads and look.

He will say: “Do you all recognize this?”

They will reply: “Yes, this is death.”

All of them would have most definitely seen it!

Thereafter it will be slaughtered, and he will say: “O inhabitants of Jannah, [this is to remain for] eternity and [there is] no [more] death! O inhabitants of the Fire! Eternity and no death!.”

Thereafter he [i.e. Nabi – sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam] recited:

‘And forewarn them of the Day of Regret when the matter [i.e. judgement] shall be passed, even though [at present] they are negligent/paying no heed and do not believe.’

(Surah Maryam, Verse: 39)

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 4730, and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2849)

2. In the famous Hadith known as Hadithus Sur, Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) has reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) has said:

‘Allah Ta’ala will judge between all of his creation except for mankind and the jin. Allah Ta’ala will pass judgement between the wild and domesticated animals. [This will be] To such an extent that He will judge in favor of a hornless animal because of a horned animal [that wronged it]. Once Allah Ta’ala is finished with that, there will not remain a single claim for anyone against another; Allah Ta’ala will say: “Become Dust”

It is at that moment that a disbeliever will say: “O I wish that I were dust!”

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
